Since its theorization, now more than 40 years ago, quantum computing has immediately shown that it has enormous potential as a method of computation. It has been realized that, by exploiting the basic principles of quantum mechanics, it is possible to carry out normally very long and complex calculations in a relatively short time. These statements, initially only demonstrated with pen and paper, today are slowly beginning to find space to be demonstrated in reality, since finally the first models, albeit still with many problems, of quantum computers are starting to appear on the market. In this course we will see how quantum computing is able to practically perform calculations and, above all, we will focus on its very close relationship with the world of HPC, since it is a common belief of the scientific community that one of the first applications of current quantum computers will be precisely that of being an accelerator for high-performance computations, a bit like GPUs do today.
In this course you will understand what quantum computing is and what it means to use a quantum computer as an accelerator for HPC computing. You will learn the difference between a General Purpose quantum computer and a Special Purpose computer, as well as the difference between NISQ quantum computers and universal quantum computers
