Travel information

The PATC course Parallel I/O and Portable Data Formats will take place on March 12th 09:00 - March 14th 16:00 2018 at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), Jülich, Germany.

Full course address:

Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH
Institute for Advanced Simulation (IAS)
Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC)
Wilhelm-Johnen-Straße
52425 Jülich
Germany

The access to the research centre is controlled by security staff members. Please be sure to take a valid passport or ID card with you! You will receive a badge at the main entrance. If you arrive by bus, you have to leave the bus on the first day at the main entrance to receive your badge.

After you received your badge you can enter the centre and go to the supercomputing building (JSC, building 16.3) as shown on the map below.

Airport

Next airports to Jülich are:

  • Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN)
  • Düsseldorf Airport (DUS)
  • Frankfurt Airport (FRA)

In all cases you need an additional train connections to Jülich. Depending on the connection you must change the train in Cologne central station (Köln Hauptbahnhof) or Cologne trade fair Deutz (Köln Messe Deutz). In any case you also have to change the train in Düren, because Jülich is only connected by a small local train called "Rurtalbahn" (direction Linnich). The train will stop at a stop called Forschungszentrum and directly within Jülich close to the Hotels.

Trains

Most of the trains in Germany are served by DB (Deutsche Bahn). You can buy tickets at a vending machines, at "DB Reisezentrum" in larger stations. In most cases it is not possible to buy tickets within the train! (except the Rurtalbahn mentioned above). Most vending machines except credit cards, and you can buy one ticket for the complete trip. However if you need to buy a seperate ticket in the rurtalbahn, its vending machien only accepts debitcards or cash. You can check the timetables and connection details via the following website (the website works quite good also for buying the tickets). It is recommended to buy the tickets for the trips from and to the airport online. Most of the tickets are not connected to a specific train, so you can also take an alternative one if your flight is delayed.

Online link for DB train tickets: https://www.bahn.com/en/view/index.shtml

Also an App version is available to check train schedules much easier during your trip.

In most cases (except the trips from Frankfurt), you receive just local train ticket, which is only valid for the short distance "red colored" trains. The faster "white colored" IC/ICE trains normally needs an explicit more expensive ticket.

Here the most important train stop names:
DÜSSELDORF FLUGHAFEN (DUS) - Dusseldorf Airport (the train stop is not directly within the Airport building, you have to take a airport transfer called skytrain. The skytrain is only for free if you have a valid train ticket to you final destination. If you plan to buy the ticket afterwards, you need a seperate skytrain ticket (sold by vending machines) (depending on the connection you need 1.5 - 2 hours for the connection to Jülich).

Frankfurt(M)Flughafen - Frankfurt Flughafen (FRA) (depending on the connection you need 2 - 3 hours for the connection to Jülich)

Köln/Bonn Flughafen - CGN Cologne airport (depending on the connection you need 1.5 hours for the connection to Jülich)

Jülich Forschungszentrum - Stop directly close to the research center

Jülich - Jülich city main station

As the German railway system sometimes is a little bit confusing, here you will find also some general informations:

Connection to the research centre

From the Hotels to the research centre there are two options:

  • You can take the train from Jülich towards Düren. The first stop will be the research centre (tickets can be bought within the train). Normally there will be a bus waiting at the research centre train stop to bring you to the entrance of the centre, but it is also possible to walk (15minutes).
  • There are bus connections from Jülich directly to the research centre. You can buy the ticket directly inside the bush (cash only). Please have a look at http://www.fz-juelich.de/ias/jsc/EN/Expertise/Workshops/Courses/travelInformationPATC.html regarding the bus names, directions and time schedules.
